About

🌄 About Peace River North School District

Located on the eastern side of the majestic Rocky Mountains, at the northern edge of the Canadian Prairies, Peace River North School District (SD60) serves a diverse and growing region in northeastern British Columbia. Our communities are surrounded by natural beauty and powered by a prosperous and expanding economy, driven by key sectors such as petrochemical, agriculture, forestry, tourism, and commercial services.

The economic strength of the region offers many opportunities for students. In fact, it’s estimated that 70% of our secondary students work between 14 and 40 hours per week, gaining valuable experience as they continue their education.

🏫 Our Schools

Peace River North provides education to ca. 6,000 students across a variety of school settings, reflecting both rural and urban needs. The district includes:

  • Multiple modern elementary schools, two middle schools, one large senior secondary school and One Grade 10 secondary school (ELC) in the city of Fort St. John
  • Four K–12 schools in rural communities

  • One of British Columbia’s nine provincial Distance Education schools, serving northeast B.C. and parts of the Northwest Territories

🌍 A Diverse, Resilient Community

Peace River North is a district shaped by mobility and diversity. While many families remain in the district for their children’s full K–12 journey, the region’s connection to Alberta and the transient nature of the petrochemical industry also bring a dynamic population of new and returning students.

Our student body reflects the diversity of the region:

  • 18% of students are Indigenous

  • A number of International ESL students contribute to a multilingual community

  • The majority of the population is Caucasian, creating a mix of cultures and perspectives

We embrace a blended rural-urban philosophy, influenced by both British Columbia and Alberta’s educational perspectives, and a strong Northern spirit that values resilience, independence, and a strong work ethic.
